How to find the right fishing rod:

Your rod is one of your most important tools for catching fish so choosing the right rod is very important. This is a quick guide that will show you some of the basics for finding the right rod.

In much the same way as golf clubs, fishingrods are very specialized tools. If you are fishing for bass you need a heavy rod for the worm bait, and a shorter, stiffer rod if you are using spinner baits and so on. Baitcasting rods and spin casting rods are very similar, and the reel from a spin casting rod can usually be used on a baitcasting rod and vice versa. You also need different rods for different bait if you are fishing for yellow walleye, for instance.

When shopping for a fishing rod at your local sporting goods store, check the specifications on the various rods by different brands such as Zebco, Lamiglas or Berkley (to name a few) to find the rod that best suits your needs. But before you head out, keep in mind that you will often find good deals at large discount stores and warehouse stores or from mail order companies. There are also a number of companies offering more specialized supplies, many of which also build customized rods to the specifications of your choice.

If you are the handy type, you may also wish to build your own fishing rod by buying the parts you need from some of these companies. But whatever you do, make sure you find a rod you are comfortable with and that has the right specifications for the type of fishing you will use it for and stick with it! If properly maintained and taken care of, you will be able enjoy it for many years to come.

Have fun!
